Veterinary Questionnaire & Situational Judgement Test

Learn how to write a bespoke and polished Veterinary Supplementary Assessment Questionnaire today and make your application truly stand out.

The supplementary assessment questionnaire (SAQ) is usually sent out by some vet schools to students after their UCAS application has been submitted. Given the brevity of the personal statement, the SAQ is often used to allow students to talk in more detail about specific attributes such as work experience, understanding of the profession and translational skills.

Some vet schools integrate a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) form as a stand-alone assessment or as part of the SAQ. SJTs are in essence a set of hypothetical but relevant scenario-based, multiple choice questions associated with veterinary medicine. Your answers will be evaluated and marked against other applicants and examiners look for sound ethical judgement.

How can we improve your SAQ?

Motivation And Commitment

Our tutors assess why you want to study veterinary medicine. Tutors evaluate your vocational and extracurricular experiences alongside personal development. We look for a broad range of examples from your work experience that highlights your understanding of the role of the vet, the veterinary profession and the sciences underpinning this vocation.

Attitude To Studies

Our tutors assess your SAQ for academic interest but also for traits that demonstrate important skills pertaining to resilience, work-life balance, teamwork, and communication. Our skilled reviewers will ensure you avoid listing experiences and assist you in prioritising which experiences to reflect on – quality is more important than quantity. This could be the final hurdle before your interview!

Academic Contents (Cambridge)

Our senior reviewers will focus closely on the use of scientific terminologies and the scientific contents of your SAQ. We assess how well you articulate your interest in the academic aspects of veterinary medicine - above and beyond the EPQ. It doesn’t have to be huge but showing you have the initiative to plan a research task will show the admissions tutors you are self-driven.

Reducing Word Count

Most students who send us their SAQs/SJTs are over the word and character limit! The word limit can be really hard to adhere to – your style of writing should be focused with argument and direction. This is where a trained eye can prioritise your reflective encounters and remove unnecessary content.

Ethics and SJT

Our tutors ensure you understand what the SJT is and what it is testing. You will be supported with structuring balanced answers and developing a logical framework for difficult ethical dilemmas. Our tutors are familiar with The RCVS Code of Professional Conduct and can succinctly integrate this into your SAQ/SJT.

Spelling and Grammar

Is all of you're spelling & grammar, correct? Just as you noticed our grammatical mistake above - make sure you double and triple-check your statement before the final submission. One of the most common faults we see is the incorrect use of commas – we run all SAQs/SJTs through Grammarly.

SAQ stands for “Supplementary Assessment Questionnaire” and consists of a series of questions that vet schools will use to assess your suitability for the course. It asks questions on your personality, work experience and personal qualities to help them better understand you. Thankfully, this is something you can prepare for! We recommend that you spend lots of time writing your answers, show your personality, your ability to reflect and it will pay off – this is the final hurdle before an interview (except Bristol who does not interview!).

The SAQs are sent out to veterinary applicants (check your spam/junk folder) after submission of the UCAS form on the 15th October. If you perform well in your SAQs, an interview will follow (except Bristol who does not interview!).

These vary by vet school, the standard of your written communication is important.

Absolutely! We run this service on demand, please contact us so we can organise a Questionnaire review with a veterinary surgeon.

We are happy to accommodate a reviewer from a specific vet school, however, all of our reviewers are equally talented and received multiple offers. Our veterinary admissions experts are well trained to look at SAQs, and will be returned with comments, suggestions and improvements – this includes line by line edits and a summary at the end.

Prior to the review of your Questionnaire, our reviewers will establish what your main ideas, concerns and expectations are. We will focus on these alongside our 10-point checklist.

We typically recommend two reviews though this does vary from student to student and there is no one answer that fits all! You can purchase more reviews at any time or request a second reviewer should you wish at any time.

Sorry, no! As current and future vets, it’s against the ethical code stipulated by the RCVS.
